Life's Luxuries - Number 2

100% pure Linen Bed Sheet Set and Duvet cover.

I got going on this after I saw the movie with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, called Practical Magic, there was a linen blanket on one of the beds that looked wonderfully comfortable. After some browsing online and a few shopping excursions, I realized this would be a harder item to find and cost more than I had anticipated.

I ended up purchasing my duvet cover from Pottery Barn. The website was having an online special and I ended up purchasing the cover for just under $100. The sheets I totally lucked out again, but this time at Tuesday Morning. If you have not been there it is located at 2169 West 12th Street, Erie PA, which is at the corner of 12th and Pittsburgh Avenue. Tuesday Morning reminds me of T.J. Maxx but without all the clothes and shoes. This sheet set was originally $400.00 and I ended up paying, again, $100.

Garnet Hill carries the sheets online if you want to check them out.

Sweet Dreams!

Life's Luxuries- Number 1

Life Luxuries Number 1.....

Dual Shower Head. If you shower with a partner frequently this is a must have. I have had one since we purchased our home 5 years ago. The best part is that you both stay warm and have your own personal on/off switch. It really is quite wonderful.

Check out this one from SkyMall.

rBGH-Free Milk

I am alarmed at the high rate of cancer in our area, especially breast cancer. My mother is a breast cancer survivor and I try to live a life without any added hormones to my diet as well as my young children.

I have been researching all the information regarding the synthetic hormone rBGH, aka Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone, that farmers inject their cattle with so as to produce more milk.

What really got me interested was that Canada, Europe, Australia, Spain, New Zealand, and more have banned this hormone and have banned American milk products in their countries.

I spoke with a representative of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture who assured me these hormones are safe. They have been in use for only ten years.

After much reading I have decided that Organic milk is the way to go. I have been purchasing Wegmans Organic Milk which clearly states "No rBGH Hormones."

Corn Stove

Well shortly we are going to be facing the time where we need to turn on our furnaces.

The best part of my furnace is that it's actually a corn/pellet stove and heats up to 3,800 square feet. Quite possibly the best investment next to my house. We bought our Quadra-Fire Mt. Vernon stove in the early spring of 2005 from Scott's Heating and Cooling in Wattsburg and have reaped the benefits of burning corn and pellets.

Our whole quality of life has improved just for the fact that I can have all rooms open at my home and have everyone very comfortabe without having to wear extra clothing in the comforts of my own home. I recommed everyone to look into corn and/or pellet stoves for their home.

Our winter is already paid for and the best thing is that at my house in the cold winter months ahead I can count on my house to be an average warm 76 degrees.

Please take a moment and take action to reduce air traffic delays and unfair taxes by visiting Smart Skies.

Smart Skies is a national campaign, led by the airlines of the Air Transport Association, that advocates modernization of the U.S. air traffic control system (ATC) and its funding mechanisms.

Zip Codes

Zip codes were implemented by the Postal Service in the 1960s, and were designed to handle the era's growing population and increased volume of business mail.

The first number identifies the region, with zero being the Northeast and nine being the West Coast. Numbers two and three identify the metro area, and the final pair specify the post office.

The Balloon Guy

If you have not been to 8 Great Tuesdays down at Liberty Park, if anything take your kids to get a balloon from the Balloon Guy.

The Balloon Guy has a list of balloon art for you to choose from. The list contains an easy sword or airplane, to a one-eyed, one-horned flying purple people eater. He is usually standing just west in the playground area near the fence, he may remind you of that tie-dyed Survivor winner from a couple years ago.

The line may take some time so be sure to get in line as soon as you can. The balloon art is free but donations are appreciated.

Enjoy!

How Many Leagues Under the Sea?

My son asked me the other day "how deep is the ocean?."

I had to Google this question and have since learned that a "League" is 3 miles below sea. I have heard this term many times throughout my life and never really took to its past.

Obviously, no one has determined how many leagues are under the sea but some might speculate 20,000.

How deep is the Ocean?

Refinishing Kitchen Cabinets

I have started refinishing my kitchen cabinets and after much research and confidence, I finally have the process down to a T. I am actually enjoying the process and seems to be the perfect project when you can only spend an hour or two at a time. Currently I have old, dark stained Oak cabinets with a shiny, waxy gloss finish. I am painting these cabinets "Abby White." Here's what I have learned.

1. Clean cabinets with TSP cleaner.
2. Strip Cabinets...I am using a Citrus Paint Stripper.
3. Carefully scrape off stripper residue with a putty knife or similar item. Wipe clean.
4. Steel wool and Lacquer thinner the entire surface ...this gets rid of any dark spots the stripper left behind and overall cleans the surface perfectly. I would not leave out this process.
5. Sand cabinets smooth, wipe clean. Clean nooks out with toothpicks or whatever works to get out any leftover steel wool and stripper in the corners.
6. Apply a sealer/primer. Let dry overnight.
7 Sand smooth again. Wipe clean.
8. Apply first coat of paint. Let dry overnight.
9. Apply second coat. Let dry overnight. Apply third coat if needed.
10. Buy new hardware, and rehang.

I skipped the paint stripper process , but continued with all other steps on the thin wood cabinet facing that is mounted to the kitchen walls, and on the backs of the cabinets. I will see overtime if it made a difference, but I assumed the facing would get the most traffic and should be done completely for best results.

Small Town Circle of Friends

Since I was raised here in Erie, I have a number of friends in all areas of town.

Friends from high school, friends from work, friends of friends, husbands friends, children's friends, and so on and so on.

The thing I find most often, is that everyone knows someone that I know and if you dig deep enough you too will have someone in common.

Everyone says "small town", but the truth in the matter is that you will find that everywhere you go and that's what makes this town great. I hear everyone knows somebody that knows somebody, every 6 people.

I love that.

I recently learned that pinking shears were named after the perennial flower Dianthus.

Dr. Charlie Pados

If any of you ever suffer from back pain, I understand.

I especially find my back pain worsen when I do not keep up with stretching everyday. But, when I do suffer from the discomfort I know I can count on one particular guy in town, his name is Dr. Charlie Pados, at State Street Chiropractic, 3308 State Street Erie PA 16508.

If you are on the prowl for a chiropractor or looking for a new Dr., I can no longer keep this man a secret.

He is hands on, no machines, and no changing into a gown. He knows where the troubled spots are, hands on, and you truly learn and understand how connected your whole body is.

I have seen different chiropractors since I was in high school and fortunately found Dr. Charlie Pados about 10 years ago. My next door neighbor loves him as much as I do.

Back pain is something I would never wish upon anyone and my heart goes out to all of you that know what I am talking about. If you're not truly satisfied with your back care, try Dr. Charlie Pados at State Street Chiropractic, 814-453-3150. You will thank me.

Travel Scrabble

My husband and I enjoy playing scrabble, but rarely ever find the time to play.

I have aTravel Scrabble game where the letters snap into place, which is great on a airplane or anywhere where your letters may move off the board.

Well, since we have children our travel scrabble board is great around the house. We usually just start a game and keep our own scores. My husband will play his round before work and leaves it on our table, after he leaves for work I play my round. He then will play a round at some point after work and I before I go to bed, and so on and so on...

I take all the time in the world and have come up with some of my best words yet. There's no scrabble pressure and it keeps us connected. The kids can bump into the board and everything stays in place. The letter display is close able so you don't lose any letters, it's great.

Our next game is going to be Chess. So my secret here is to play a game with your mate, it will add some excitement to your routine.

Layovers In Philadelphia

If you are ever layed over at the Philadelphia Airport or are looking for a fun day trip, downtown Philadelphia is an easy commute from the airport.

The Septa train can transport you from the airport to Center City Philadelphia. The cost is $5.50 dollars one way and runs every 30 minutes in both directions. The commute takes about 20 minutes. Please check the website for additional information regarding schedules.

I have taken the commute many times and have enjoyed many day trips to Philadelphia, with and without my children. The city in easy to navigate through, and is on a grid system, like the streets in Erie. Downtown has great shopping on Walnut and Chestnut streets between 11th - 18th streets. The zoo is an easy destination, although you would need to connect to a bus route.

So, if you have a few hours in Philadelphia, jump on the train and visit the city. Market East Station has a Hard Rock Cafe and many other food vendors to grab yourself a Philly Steak Sub, and ride back to the airport with enough time to catch your flight.

So my secret here is to go and be adventerous.

Dressed by Hand Maidens

I recently learned the reason men's buttons are typically on the right side of a shirt and the reason women's buttons are on the left side.

Back in the day, the wealthier ladies were dressed by hand-maidens and it was easier to manipulate the buttons on the right side, facing the garment.

28 April 2007

Scott Park, Erie PA

We recently visited Scott Park, located just 1/2 mile east of 6th and Peninsula Drive. There is a new playground that has been added since last year.

This park also has a picnic shelter, restrooms, sand court volleyball, basketball court, BMX racing course and a baseball field. The park also connects to a bike/walking trail with views of the bay.

The picnic shelter is available Saturday and Sunday by reservation only thru Memorial to Labor Day by calling Millcreek Township at 814-835-4122. Weekdays and all other weekends are available first come first serve.

Last year we rode our bikes thru the trails and my son remembered the BMX track that he never got to ride on, and had asked me to return to Scott Park so he could ride the track. So I am looking into when the BMX track would be available to the public.

My secret here is to remind you that your children remember everything.

Pier One Imports Sale 75%

We just went to Pier One Imports yesterday on Peach Street, and they are having a 75% off sale, which is a rarity for Pier One Imports.

We really got some great deals. One of the items I got was originally priced for $99. It's a wooden wine cubby stand which I am using as a laptop stand, with paperwork and sorts inside the slanted cubby slots. It's perfect, and was only $24.75.

The sales woman told us that the sale runs until the over-stock is sold, or unless otherwise told. I would hurry in due to stock availability.

Happy Shopping.

Have you just met someone new or have been dating for a while and want to know for sure if this is a possible candidate for a true relationship?

This is what you will need to do. Take a drive in the car together and purposely get yourselves lost. This may sound crazy but it will really expose a side of his/her personality that is important to learn. Try it!

So my secret here is that's when you will know it's true!

Have you rode the loop?

In 2005, Penndot completed the west side bike path that links Frontier Park to the Bayfront walkway.

The Frontier Park Loop connects to Bicycle PA Route Z which begins at Route 20 at the Ohio border and ends at PA 5 at the New York Border. Which is the shortest bike route in Pennsylvania at 46 miles long.

This project has enabled us to completely loop around Frontier Park and continue either west or east on PA Bike Route Z.

The secret is that you are never to far to begin your journey.

For a list of other PA bike routes and complete directions, check out PA Highways.

Arthritis

Does anyone suffer from any type of arthritis or hand pain of any sort?

My hands are in pain a lot. When I do things like scrape the snow off my car, vacuum my stairs, cut chicken, type too long, to just name a few. I went to my family doctor, had blood taken and x-rays on both hands. My Rheumatoid factor was up, so I needed to see a specialist.

After waiting in a cold waiting room, half naked in a hospital gown, and listening to the doctor flirt with a drug rep for 30 minutes, he finally entered. He asked his questions and did a exam on my hands and feet. Five minutes later, I was diagnosed with "Overuse Syndrome"......what?
Is that what they call hand pain when they can't figure anything else out? Has anyone ever been diagnosed with such a diagnosis?

So my secret here is be happy that it wasn't Rheumatoid arthritis.

16 April 2007

How happy are you?

This was on Oprah the other day.

How happy are you? Take the test,
answer with 1-7, seven being the highest..

1. In most ways my life is close to ideal.
2. The conditions of my life are excellent.
3. I am satisfied with my life.
4. So far, I have gotten the important things i want in life.
5. If I could live my life over, I would change almost nothing.

add score up
31-35 --extremely satisfied
15-or below dissatisfied with life
and somewhere in between there's room to become a happier person. Dr. Robert Holden has some advice how to live a more satisfying life.

14 April 2007

Looking for somewhere to eat?

I am always in pursuit of a great place to eat that is child friendly .

Hence my next perfect place to eat is Crabby Pats Country Roadhouse, 4646 Buffalo Road, Erie PA. My favorite reason is that although my children are pretty much well behaved when we go out to eat, their voices can carry at times but since the music is a little louder in this restaurant than most, I feel my kids can be kids and I'm not having to tell them to shush all the while.

The kids can color on the white paper table cover as well as on their child's play mat and we can all enjoy shelled peanuts while waiting for our meal. After the meal, next door is Skateway, so if diner doesn't tire your family out, then you could go roller skating and assure the kids will sleep on the way home.

My husband likes Crabby Pat's because the food is great and in large portions!

My secret here is that the sweet potatoes are the biggest in town and no one has the sweet butter like they do.

12 April 2007

Do you listen to your conscious?

I know that we live in a world that a large number of marriages end in divorce.

My question is, wasn't there a part of you that knew from the very beginning, before the marriage ceremony, that this may not be the "one"? I believe our conscious speak to us in many ways, and that the majority of people choose to ignore that part of themselves. My secret is to always listen to your conscious it's telling you what to do..all you have to do is listen.

Erie Planetarium

When was the last time you were in a planetarium?

This is a nice activity to do with the whole family. You will need to call for current show and times at 814-871-5790. The Erie planetarium is located at 356 West 6Th Street, Erie PA, which is inside the Mansion Carriage House.

The secret here is that this is a great activity for adults with or without the children and everyone will enjoy themselves.

Erie's city sidewalks and streets

As summer fast approaching and children playing outside more, I want the opportunity to voice my concern to watch the children.

Raised in Millcreek, I made the move to the city, after living in Downtown Pittsburgh, as well as Mount Washington. I am a proud city dweller.

My only concern here is the people who choose to drive 45mph down a side street where the speed limit is only 25, please slow down, or take the route that would put you on a street marked with the appropriate speed limit. Really, what is the rush?

My other concern is that when you are pulling into or out of your driveway, or into or out of a city business driveway is to please stop before the sidewalk and check for children who may be on their bikes or running past.

Erie is great town, and the secret here is to slow down and enjoy the view.

07 April 2007

YMCA

I have been a member of the YMCA since I moved back to Erie after attending college in Pittsburgh in 1995. The YMCA has so many great programs for individuals, as well as the whole family.

First, and foremost, the Y has four locations in our area. Eastside, Downtown, Glenwood and Edinboro. I have used 3 of the 4, with Edinboro being the one I have not used, but I still have that option.

Second, the Y offers daycare free of charge while you work out! This is a big plus, since I thought after I had children it will be hard to find the time to go and work out, but this is not the case. It's great to go workout and still have time to steam or get in the sauna, then get a shower, and not worry about the children.

Third, having choices of different times and different classes and equipment, which really helps to promote diversity in working out. One day you may want a spinning class, the next day you may want to take a kickboxing class. Some days you may of missed the 9:20 class at Glenwood, but can make the 10:00 class at the Eastside. Our bodies can hit plateaus doing the same workout day after day, and options help to avoid this situation, and keeps your body guessing.

Lastly, the Y provides swimming lessons, tumbling, and other classes geared to children, with the cost included in your annual membership. So if your looking for a change in yourself this year, take a moment and check out your local Y.

I have heard a lot of residents state that they don't go to certain other fitness centers in the area, because they feel they have to "get ready" to sweat, this is not the case at the Y's. Everyone is there to work out and feel great afterwords, and I have never felt like I should have done my hair before I go there. It's a very friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

Living in Erie, these three locations are never far from where you live and have served me well and I will continue to brag what great options I have.

The Glenwood YMCA is due to go under a $2.5 to $3 million, 2 story expansion, which will make the facility larger to accommodate the surge of Erie residents who have already discovered the secret.

Lost Luggage 102

As a result of Lost Luggage 101, I have had to add yet another problematic topic. As a result of you not receiving your luggage at your destination, and so to save you undue stresses in life, the following items should be stowed in your carry on luggagewith you. Hence my next secret, do not pack these items in your checked luggage: medications, keys to your car, money, very valuable momental items, jewelry, necessary baby items, needed medical equipment and any other items that you feel you could not live without. Thank you.

04 April 2007

Lost Luggage 101

As an airline employee for the last 12 years, I have a bit of knowledge on the 'ins and outs" of airline policies and procedures. I would love to start with lost luggage.

It can be very hard to unload an aircraft and get 200 pieces of luggage to their next flight in a matter of minutes compounded by unexpected delays. This is the number one reason luggage gets "lost." So the luggage then gets set aside for the next available flight to your destination, if it had not made it on your plane. Also with close connections in large airports and the numerous aircraft delays this only compounds the difficulty in getting luggage where it needs to go.

Unfortunately, when a bag is lost, this is a problem I cannot resolve on my own if I were fielding your claim at the counter. But we all do what we can.

Also, another misconception of passengers is that baggage is traced like a UPS package, this is not the case.

Luggage is tagged with your flight numbers and airport codes e.g. ERI (Erie), and as the bags are put on the airport's hubs conveyor system, they are sorted by zones. The next step is an employee then physically picks the bags up in the bag room and puts them on the appropriate luggage cart to its destination. Sometimes bags are accidentally put on wrong luggage carts, sometimes bags get stuck on the conveyor, due to loose luggage straps. Sometimes bags come into the bag room late, due to late arriving aircraft, or you may have checked in late and an employee has already taken the luggage cart to the appropriate aircraft, without your bag. Sometimes bags are mistagged or the tags may have fallen off.

So, I actually have four secrets here, and they are: 1) Arrive at the airport early, meaning at least one or two hours early, even if think your airport is small and it should be no big deal if you arrive at the airport 15 minutes before your plane is due to depart. 2) Watch the employee tag your bag, meaning the one with Your name on it. 3) Put a name tag on the outside of your bag, with appropriate phone numbers, also put a name tag inside the outer most pocket of the luggage, with your name and phone numbers as well, with a copy of your itinerary. 4) Take any loose straps and hooks off and tuck them inside your bag. All humans error and you can never control Mother Nature! Be Patient. Thank you.

Presque Isle Erie PA

Well, since I was raised in Erie and have always had very easy access to the beach, and thus I have truly embraced the beauty of our beaches. There is nothing like it around. I have traveled to many beaches in the world, and the truth is that every where you go the people are doing exactly what you or I am could be doing with just slight variances on the weather.

Every summer I figure out which beach is the best suited for my family and usually just go to the same beach every time, this also saves me from having to explain myself every time I meet family or friends. Let it be known that all the beaches are not the same and can change from day to day. Sometimes the water can be clear at one beach and green at another, one can smell like the a "summer beach" and one can smell like some "dead fish".; so the secret here is if you come across the worst of the two, walk down a ways or get back in the car and drive to the next one. Last summer ours was Beach 8, Pettinato Beach, which always smelled of a summer beach and the water was clear and has concession stands and bathrooms, and this year? I'll find out soon. . . .

Need some time without the kids?

Here's a great idea complete with free babysitting. Go to the grocery store! My husband and I have had many free dates, and some quality time with each other, walking around the grocery store. We have so far used the W-Kids Fun Center at the Wegman's store on Peach St., and two Giant Eagle Eagle's Nest. Giant Eagle on upper Peach and the store on West 12th Street. Children must be 3 years old to use these facilities, and you obviously have to stay in the store.

I have found it's easier when you both grab a shopping cart and it's a fun way to shop and stay connected. The secret here is when you look around you really don't have to do the suspected. You can just have a cup of coffee and just sit there and relax for a moment and not feel guilty.

p.s. It's fun alone too!

Don't U Wanna Come? 3121

Well here it is, 2 days after the Prince show at club 3121 in the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and the show was by far the best show I have been to..Prince is quite the artist. He came out from behind his band in a great yellow suit that only he could wear so well and made a change into his classic purple suit. He played some of his best songs which included: ( in no particular order)
3121
Musicology
Purple Rain
On the Couch
Lolita
Cream
Nothing compares to you
Emale
Human Body

I am still comprising the song list..
Going into the night, the one and only concern was the "upscale nightclub attire" dress requirement; although it wasn't enforced to my expectations, I really took the time and dressed up for the event..Long sleeved beige/ gold shimmery just above the knee dress with big brushed silver earrings, and cream open toe leather wedges..perfect for the occasion I felt great. The secret here is, if you feel good you look great.

My husband truly understands, and appreciates Prince on a whole new level.

I am going to see Prince..we are seeing Prince on 23 mar 07...

My secret here is that I was on Ticketmaster.com twice a day, until I got the tickets and ended up getting them for the cheapest going rate.
